Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQs
What is Re-Give?
Re-Give
is an online crowdfunding platform that enables its clients
(individuals
and
social entities such as charities, social enterprises, etc
that create positive social impact)
to raise returnable donations (interest-free loans) directly from
the general public, funding organisations
(e.g. trusts & foundations), corporate philanthropists,
etc.
It is designed to complement existing fundraising platforms and
provides a safe, reliable, secure and easy-to-use way for funders
to make returnable donations to the social entities of their
choice – thus empowering and inspiring the public and social
entities all across the world to make a real, positive difference
in their communities and to their society.
Re-Give Limited is an FSA Registered
Industrial & Provident Society. No 31497R.
Re-Give originated from a UK registered
charity that
worked for more than 25 years as a channel through
which returnable donations
were
made for projects overseas.
The charity realised that this service has significant potential
and thus, Re-Give was established and spun-off as an independent
entity to develop and to expand the returnable donations funding
model.
Why
is Re-Give doing this?
Re-Give is addressing a significant national problem: the
availability and affordability of finance for
enterprising social entities. Through a unique, effective
solution: Re-Give is spreading the funding risk and making it
easier and faster for its clients to raise low cost capital
directly from the general public & organisational funders. In
doing this, Re-Give is helping to strengthen civil society.
Who
is running Re-Give?
Re-Give’s management and advisory team consists of some of the
leading individuals in the UK business world and civil society
industry and have considerable professional experience, expertise,
reputation and proven operational track record. Profiles of
each individual will be on this site soon.
What is a returnable
donation?
A
returnable donation
(known here as a Re-Give
donation)
is where the
social entity
that you donate to
returns the
exact amount of money you donated to it - back to you at an agreed
future date.
The returnable donation model is a pioneering, mass-public
fundraising initiative, with the potential to revolutionise the
civil society funding landscape and to open-up a huge untapped
resource; potentially drawing-in and recycling million of pounds
every year and enabling enterprising social entities all across
the world to launch, develop and prosper:
FOR FUND SEEKERS:
Re-Give enables social entities to seek returnable
donations quickly and easily directly from the public for
launching and supporting:
major social and charitable projects and programmes, bridging
funding shortfalls, repaying debts, maintaining current
developments, etc. In Re-Give, they have a major,
low-cost, stable source of long and short-term capital which will
help them to transform and to build a more robust, a much
stronger, healthier and a more vibrant civil society.
FOR FUNDERS:
Re-Give enables funding
organisations, corporate philanthropists and the general public to
achieve much more with the same ‘pot’ of their money
(i.e. Re-Give generates a greater,
a more sustained, enhanced, long-term social value, return and
impact) and also gives
an increased depth of flexibility and strategic additionality in
making funding decisions. This clearly has significant, lasting
benefits for both individual and organisational funders as well as
the entire civil society sector.
Won't this mean that people will switch from making normal
donations to making Re-Give donations?
We don't believe so as Re-Give donations are just another way
(alongside normal donations) to support a social entity of your choice –
not a replacement for normal donations altogether.
-
The vast majority of
social entities
(especially
charities)
cannot use Re-Give donations
because they cannot return the donations back. These
social entities
depend on normal donations from benefactors such as yourself
to carry out their activities (which are often costly and do
not generate any revenues) and making just a Re-Give donation
to them only instead of a normal donation is not only
counter-productive but it might cause them financial and
operational difficulties.
-
Social
entities that ask for Re-Give donations mostly do so for
large projects and programmes that need capital quickly and in
considerable amounts - not for normal activities. Therefore,
it is essential that normal donations to these
social entities are
not stopped or reduced as this may affect their current and
future activities and also their ability to return Re-Give
donations.
-
Normal one-off and regular/recurring donations consists of
relatively small amounts of money which the donor is happy not
to see again, whereas a Re-Give donation is often a much
larger amount (because the donor is safe in the knowledge that
they will get all of their money back later on) which the
donor wishes to see back and therefore, most people make
Re-Give donations from a completely separate ‘pot’ of money
than that which they make normal donations from.
Why should I consider making a Re-Give donation?
"...returnable donations help to
create new (and to sustain existing) jobs, contribute
significantly toward the growth of the local and national British
economy and tactically drive forward civil society – and enable
socially aware individuals and organisations to make a financially
small, yet a profoundly giant leap towards making this a genuine,
lasting reality. It is positive, renewable philanthropy and if
lots of people start making returnable donations today, we might
start to see some extraordinary changes in our society tomorrow..."
Re-Give donations can be used to effect an immense amount of good
in society, engender greater and more active involvement from the
general public and give enterprising social entities
the initial and on-going financial lift that they need to launch
and develop major (often capital intensive but revenue generating)
projects and programmes.
As
Re-Give donations are recyclable – you can help many different
social entities over a longer period of time and more substantially with
the same ‘pot’ of money and you will have an increased depth of
flexibility and strategic additionality when supporting social
entities
and be able to achieve a greater, more sustained, long-term social
value and impact and generate a greater ‘bang for your buck’.
By
making a Re-Give donation – you will allow social entities to prioritise
what really matters most to your community and society and to
maximise the individual, social, environmental and humanitarian
impact and benefits of intrinsically and inherently progressive
social and charitable endeavours (any financial returns you
potentially would have made if you invested your money during the
period your Re-Give donation is with a social entity is considered as an
actual one-off donation made by you to further social and
charitable causes – and is replaced by a tangible and measurable
social return - i.e. the good your money will be doing all over
the country and potentially, the world).
Therefore, although a Re-Give donation will not give you anything
back financially – it will give you the fulfilment, the
gratification, the satisfaction and the uplifting and rewarding
feeling of knowing that you are helping to create a better future
for everyone – over and over again.
We
at Re-Give will ensure that your Re-Give donations are made to
only fully vetted, verified, validated and viable social
entities so that you can be certain that the social
entity you make a Re-Give donation to will return the donation
amount back to you in full at an agreed date.
How do I know that my Re-Give donation will be returned?
Only validated social entities will be registered with us and each
will be given a risk rating to enable you to determine the level
of risk involved in making a returnable donation to a particular
registered social entity (Re-Give client).
The rating will be given by an independent, professional 3rd party
and will range from AAA
(very low risk: return of donation is guaranteed by the recipient)
to D (very
high risk: return of donation is not guaranteed by the recipient).
Highly rated entities will find it easier to secure returnable
donations because you and other funders will naturally feel that
there is less risk in giving to them. These social entities will,
therefore, automatically and proactively ensure that their ratings
remain high by returning all donations in full on the agreed date
(as breaches of terms will reflect in lower ratings – resulting in
more difficulty in securing returnable donations in the future).
Low rated entities will aspire to improve their ratings so that
they secure returnable donations more easily and one way they can
do this is to ensure that they return all donations in full on the
agreed date.
The minimum returnable donation amount, the minimum time period,
terms & conditions, etc will be stated by the registered social
entity on their project profile page but will also be negotiable
between you and the social entity.
Along with ratings, you will also be able to select specific
projects, programmes, business cycles (proof of concept, start-up,
growing, mature, etc) and areas of social enterprise activity and
charitable sectors/objects.
Thus, a
social entity
that is registered with us will not wish to damage its
hard earned
risk ratings and
reputation and future fundraising capabilities by not
returning a donation in full (that it has agreed to return). This
is a powerful reason why you can be certain that your donation
will be returned in full by the relevant social entity at the agreed
time.
DISCLAIMER:
It is essential that a Re-Give donation is always made
to a
social entity that has the means and the ability to return the
donation back to you at the agreed time. We at Re-Give
will do our best to
ensure that
only social entities that meet this primary
requirement are registered with us.
Each social entity
will
undergo detailed vetting and status verification
with their respective regulator and their financial status is then
checked on a commercial basis and only after they pass all the
validation, verification and vetting - will we
give them a risk rating.
Once a social entity
has a risk rating, you can be certain that it has
been fully vetted and you will then have the option to decide
whether you wish to make a Re-Give donation to them or not, based
on the information they have provided about themselves and their
projects on our site.
However, please bear in mind that when you make a Re-Give donation to a
social entity of your choice through our site - you are not giving the
money to us, but to that specific social entity. It is, therefore, the
actual beneficiary of your Re-Give donation that is
legally
responsible
for returning the donation back to you, not Re-Give
itself.
How much does Re-Give charge social entities for its service?
Unlike
many other online fundraising services:
Social
entities do however pay
a small 5% administration fee (which
includes all credit and debit card charges) on each Re-Give
donation to cover Re-Give's costs in providing this service (there is no
charge of any kind for fundraisers and donors – for whom the site
is absolutely free to use and to make Re-Give donations through).
To put this into context:
-
According to
Charityfacts*
UK social entities spend
(on average)
between
15% and
25%
upfront to raise £1 - with no guarantee of success.
-
And in terms of the credit and debit card charges; the average
fees charged by companies like WorldPay is around 3% for a
single one way transaction (2 way =
6%).
By comparison, Re-Give provides a significantly lower-cost and
risk-free method of fundraising for social entities and at the same
time, gives them the exceptional ability to raise substantial
amounts of money very quickly and easily.
Also, bear in mind that even after the administration fee is taken
into account and adjusting for Gift Aid - social entities will most
probably raise more on Re-Give than through any other fundraising
service. Here is

How is Re-Give funded?
Re-Give is funded
through the adminstraion fee; the risk rating fee;
by individual and
corporate philanthropists;
grants from strategic and operational
partners, trusts and foundations;
corporate sponsorships and by
the general public through normal one-off and regular/recurring
donations.
It is supported by a range of companies and professional
individuals who provide their services and make good use of their
expertise on a pro-bono basis as part of the investment they make
to the community and to the wider society.
Why does Re-Give need all this funding?
Re-Give provides a
highly professional and effective – and an extremely valuable –
service to social entities and the general public (donors &
fundraisers).
Re-Give uses,
builds and
maintains the very latest (often very expensive) technology
innovations
and a
fast, secure and robust online
system and carries out continuous marketing of its services to
millions of people across the UK and worldwide and maintains a
high-profile PR exposure to augment this marketing.
All of this is managed by a highly professional team who
also
provide support, advice and assistance to social entities, donors and
fundraisers - and is for the purpose of giving social entities the
exceptional ability to raise substantial amounts of money very
quickly and easily and for donors to make Re-Give donations so
that their money can do good over and over again.
Re-Give also works to develop a constant stream of innovative
fundraising tools that make it even easier for social entities to reach
more people and to raise more money (it uses the expertise of
highly knowledgeable professionals to develop new ways to help
social entities raise more).
In short: Re-Give
has a ready-made, sophisticated, professional, hassle-free,
minimal-cost, mass marketed service for
social entities, donors
and fundraisers to start using straightaway. This
level of operation costs a considerable amount of money – hence
the reason why Re-Give requires a lot of financial assistance from
many different groups of people and organisations.

England and Wales, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator or

sports clubs) and social entities which are not currently required to
register with a charity regulator can also register with Re-Give

If I use Re-Give, will my details be passed on to the social
entities I
support?
Not unless you give permission to allow a specific social entity to
access your contact details – in which case, we will pass this on
to the relevant social entity on your behalf.
Can I make an anonymous donation?
Yes, you can – but we would still need your valid payment and
contact details in order for the social entity you made a Re-Give
donation to, to return the donation back to you.
If you’re making a donation to
a
friend we’ll ask whether you
would like to leave your name and a message on their fundraising
page. If you’d like to remain anonymous, just tick the box to say
so.
However we’ll still need to pass on your valid payment and contact
details to the social entity so that they can accept your donation and
return it at the agreed time.
Social
entities can only use your details
if you give them permission.
How do I know my payment is secure?
Re-Give uses the latest security technology. Payments are verified
by Visa and
Mastercard
SecureCode which gives users added protection for online financial
transactions.
The Re-Give service uses an advanced encryption technology
provided by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a recognised
authentication and encryption software. Your personal information
is encrypted, including your credit card number, name, and
address. All of your information is kept encrypted on a secure
database which is not accessible to anyone except Re-Give, and of
course, we will not disclose your information to anyone without
your permission.
Will I receive confirmation that my donation has been processed?
Yes. You will receive an e-mail confirmation once you have
donated
with
the transaction details and a PDF of the returnable donation legal
agreement between you and the social entity.
This is sufficient to serve as a receipt for tax purposes and as
proof that you made the donation and will include details of the
social entity you made a Re-Give donation to, when you will get your
donation returned back to you and other pertinent information.
Please keep a copy for your records.
Also, your Re-Give donation history and the portfolio of
social entities
to which you have made Re-Give donations to, when you will get
your donation returned back to you and other pertinent information
will all be available on your own secured section of our site.
Please log-in to your account to see this.
You can download the page in Word, PDF or Excel format to keep as
your hardcopy record.
What is Gift Aid?
The UK government allows social entities to claim back tax on donations.
This tax relief is called ‘Gift Aid’.
Gift Aid is given by the government on donations at a rate of 25p
in the pound, so for every £1 you donate the government will give
the social entity a further 25p if you are a UK tax payer. This means
that even more money is going to good causes.
However,
as a Re-Give donation is money that will come back to
you, it
is
not eligible for Gift Aid.
I
am a UK taxpayer. Will my chosen social entity benefit from Gift Aid?
Unfortunately not because your
Re-Give donation is money that will come back to you,
therefore
it will not be eligible for Gift Aid.
I want to donate to a particular social entity but I'm not getting an
option to Gift Aid my donation. Why is this?
Please see the answer to the questiosn above.
I did tick the box saying that I am a UK taxpayer but I notice
that my donation is not showing any Gift Aid. Why is this?
Please see the answer to the questiosn above.
I want to make a donation on behalf of a company - is that OK?
Yes,
we can accept
Re-Give donations
made
on behalf of
companies
and
other
organisations - including other social entities.
I live outside the UK. Can I support fundraisers and social
entities
through Re-Give?
Yes, you can
- anyone, anywhere in the world can access our site
and make Re-Give donations online.
The only thing to be aware of is that payment is taken in pounds
sterling.
Therefore, the amount you donate will vary
and be subject to the exchange rate of your currency against the
pound sterling at the time of each transaction.
Why wasn’t my credit/debit card accepted?
There are several reasons why a credit or debit card might not be
accepted. You may want to try the transaction again, checking that
you have typed in the card number correctly, that the expiry date
is correct and that the name you've typed in appears exactly as it
does on the card.
If your card details have all been entered correctly and the
donation is still unsuccessful, please contact us via live chat
Monday to Saturday 8am - 8pm (9am – 6pm on bank holidays) or via
email anytime (we aim to respond within 1 working day). Our online
help can be accessed 24 hours a day.

Will it cost us anything to use Re-Give?
Please see the answer to the question

above.
Does my social entity have to be Gift Aid registered to use Re-Give?
No, you don’t have to be Gift Aid registered to set up an account
with us.
Will Re-Give collect Gift Aid on our behalf?
Unfortunately not because a Re-Give donation is money that
you will need to return back to the donor,
therefore it will not be eligible for Gift Aid.
Can we use other online giving services as well?
Yes of course.
We want to
encourage as many people as we can to donate online and to help

Re-Give will help increase the amount of money raised by UK
social entities because it complements existing fee and commission-based
services, giving fundraisers and their supporters more choice over
how they donate online.
Can
a start-up or a proof-of concept social entity or project
register on Re-Give?
Yes, start-ups and proof-of-concept social entities and projects
can register on Re-Give provided that they are constituted

millions of people across the UK and worldwide and maintaining a
high-profile PR exposure to augment this marketing – while at the
same time providing support, advice and assistance to donors and
fundraisers and
developing a constant stream of innovative fundraising tools that
make it even easier for donors to give money to you will be a very
expensive endeavour and thus
might not be cost-effective for you to set up and administer
unless you are hoping to raise hundreds of millions of pounds of
returnable donations just for your social entity every year.

I’ve forgotten my password – can I reset this?
Yes it’s quick and easy to reset your password using the e-mail
address you used when you registered with us. Please click here
and follow the onscreen instructions.
Can we customise the appearance of our pages to link them more
strongly to our social entity?
Yes, you can customise your pages by adding your social entity’s logo
and including links to other web sites. You can upload photos,
videos, presentations, documents, etc to your fundraising pages
and link out to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter,
Flickr, YouTube, etc.
Your social entity’s logo and profile will also appear on the Re-Give
search results page as well as on the pages of the fundraisers who
are supporting you.
My social entity already has a Facebook page – can I link our Re-Give
page to this?
Yes, it’s easy to link up. Find out how to do this in the ‘Linking
to social media sites’ section of our help guide.
Can we create separate pages for different projects and events?
Yes. Each project and event has its own page so that it is clear
to fundraisers which project or event they need to sign up to,
donate to or fundraise for.
See our help guide for details on how to create a fundraising
event for your social entity.
Can we set start and end dates for our projects events?
It’s up to you how long your projects and events are shown on
Re-Give – you can set and change the dates easily from your
social entity’s account whenever you like.
This gives you the flexibility to set up projects and events in
advance and only show them to fundraisers when you’re ready, or
set cut-off points for funding projects and joining events so you
have time to send fundraisers all the information they need.
You can also determine, after a project or event has closed, how
long you can continue to collect money to raise funds (up to a
maximum of two years).
Can I modify and update my social entity page?
Yes. Just log-in to your account and from your social entity home page,
you can modify and update your profile details by following the
on-screen instructions.
Please note that some changes, such as amending your bank account
details, cannot be fully completed online as they will need to be

Will we receive an e-mail notification for every Re-Give donation
made?
No, but the reporting function captures this information and you
can access this information anytime you want by logging into your
account.
Can I find out who is raising funds for us, and how much they’ve
raised?
Yes, you can. This information can be accessed through the
reporting function from your social entity account homepage. Please note
though that your donors and fundraisers have the ability to
determine the level of information that they want you to see and
that some may wish to remain anonymous.
Will Re-Give give us contact details for fundraisers and donors?
Yes, providing that they have given permission for their details
to be passed on. This information can be accessed via the
reporting function from your social entity account homepage.
Do the fundraising totals shown on Re-Give include Gift Aid?
Unfortunately not because a Re-Give donation is money that
you will need to return back to the donor,
therefore it will not be eligible for Gift Aid.
How long will it take for donations to reach our bank account?
Payments will be deposited into the bank account you registered
with on Re-Give on a weekly basis by BACS transfer.
Do I need to set up a dedicated bank account for my social entity?
No, you don't. You can use any of your existing bank accounts.
Please note that you can only nominate one bank account when you
register with Re-Give.
Can money raised through different events and activities be paid
into different bank accounts?
Yes, we are able to
pay monies into multiple bank
accounts.
However, each account will need to be validated and confirmed by
us first.
Can I change the bank account that you pay my donations into?
Yes. Our help guide will give you details on how to do this.
Can I get reporting information for my social entity?
Yes. Our help guide will give you details on how to do this.
Does Re-Give support all internet browsers?
Yes,
Re-Give supports all internet browsers.
Can I match the reporting codes on Re-Give to my social entity's system?
Yes, by using “tagging” you can enter up to 6 tags (cost centre
codes, fundraiser location codes etc) to every fundraiser
participating in a project or event for your social entity. The ability
to “tag” your individual fundraisers to match those in your own
systems saves you time and makes identifying your fundraisers much
easier. Tagging is simple and easy to use. For more information,
please refer to our help guide.
I work at a local branch of a national
social entity. Do we need to
register with Re-Give separately?
If you have your own registration number, you have the ability to
register separately with Re-Give.
However, we suggest you might like to check with your
national social entity before registering with us.
What should I do if I don't receive an email that I am expecting
from Re-Give?
In the first instance, please check your spam or junk folders in
case it has been misplaced and add Re-Give to your 'contacts' to
ensure that you do receive any future emails we send to you. If
you still cannot find the email you are expecting, please contact
us.

fundraising activity. Click on 'START NOW' and then view the

them directly though our ‘Tell a social entity about you’ section on the
Register page.
If the social entity you want to support is registered with us but the
project or event you want to fundraise for is not, we can contact
the social entity on your behalf to ask them to give you permission to
list the project or event or you can contact them directly though
our ‘Tell a social entity about your project’ section on the Register
page.
What social entities can I fundraise for on Re-Give?
All UK active social entities are invited to register with Re-Give
provided that they are registered with the Charity Commission for
England and Wales, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator or
HMRC for social entities in Northern Ireland. CASCs (community amateur
sports clubs) and social entities which are not currently required to
register with a charity regulator can also register with Re-Give
using their HMRC reference number as well as businesses that are
legally
recognised
as social enterprises.
If you click on 'START NOW' and then view the social entity index, you
can see exactly who has registered with Re-Give.

Can I customise the appearance of my fundraising pages?
Yes, you can customise your pages by adding your social entity’s logo
and including links to other web sites. You can upload photos,
videos, presentations, documents, etc to your fundraising pages
and link out to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter,
Flickr, YouTube, etc.
Your social entity’s logo and profile will also appear on the Re-Give
search results page as well as on your personal fundraising pages.
I have a Facebook and Twitter account - can I link my fundraising
pages to this?
Yes, it’s easy to link up. Find out how to do this in our help
guide.
Can I raise money for more than one social entity?
Yes absolutely. You can set up pages for as many fundraising
projects and activities as you like, using each page to raise
funds for a different social entity. However, each social entity will need to
approve your proposed fundraising activity before it goes live on
our site.
Can I see who's sponsoring me?
Yes, you can. This information can be accessed through the
reporting function from your personal account homepage. However
please remember that your donors have the ability to determine the
level of information that they want you to see. Anonymous
donations will only show the amount donated.
Can I arrange for thank you emails to be sent automatically when
somebody sponsors me?
Yes, you can. Re-Give has an automatic email facility which is not
mandatory and you can turn this off if you prefer.
You can also use either your own text or the default text which
you can customise if you wish or turn off completely.
If I use Re-Give, will my details be passed on to the social
entities I
support?
Not unless you have given the social entity permission that they can
have access to your contact details and then we will pass them on
to the social entity on your behalf.
Some of the people who want to sponsor me do not use the internet.
Can I add their donations to the money you help me raise online?
Yes, just add this money to your ‘offline Re-Give donations’
total. Should you decide to make an online card donation to
yourself for the amount you have collected offline, please ensure
that you do not tick the “I am eligible for Gift Aid” box.
Some of the people I hope will support me live outside the UK. Can
they use Re-Give?
That’s no problem. Anyone, anywhere in the world can access our
site and make Re-Give donations online.
The only thing to be aware of is that payment is taken in pounds
sterling and that donors will only be able to claim Gift Aid if
they pay tax in the UK. Therefore, the amount donated by your
non-UK supporters will vary and be subject to the exchange rate of
their currency against the pound sterling at the time of their
transaction.
How long will my fundraising page be on Re-Give?
Each of your fundraising pages will appear on the Re-Give website
for as long as you and your social entity want them to - you can set and
changes the dates easily from your personal account whenever you
like (up to a maximum of two years) – but the social entity will be able
to limit the time period.
This gives you and the social entity the flexibility to determine when
they come off. Even when your project or events page has closed
you will still be able to view it in your personal archive (please
note that fundraiser archive pages will not be publicly
available).
We recommend you leave your fundraising page open for a while
after your event has finished. People may want to sponsor you
later when they see how much effort you’ve put in!
